In Sitka, Alaska, humpback whales perform a breathtaking spectacle known as bubble net feeding during early spring, when their primary prey—herring—is abundant. One whale begins by exhaling a burst of air through its blowhole underwater, sending a spiral of bubbles toward the surface. As the pod joins in, the bubbles form a net, trapping schools of fish. The whales then swim upwards with their mouths wide open, capturing the fish in a synchronized display of power and precision. During my 2024 trip, we witnessed at least 30 bubble net feedings each day, offering ample opportunities to capture these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. A trip to Sitka offers a chance to photograph humpback whales, along with other wildlife like bald eagles, sea lions, and gray whales, over one-two- or three full days on the water.
